Anthropic launched Fable 5, its most capable model, on June 10, 2026. Two days later, the US government ordered it offline for all users globally.

Anthropic Launches Fable 5 and Mythos 5

On June 10, 2026, Anthropic launched Fable 5, its most capable model to date. The model was designed as a significant leap in capability for complex, multi-step reasoning and professional work. It launched alongside a companion model called Mythos 5, and both were immediately available to Claude subscribers.

The US Government Orders Fable 5 Offline

Two days later, on June 12, the US government issued an export control directive. The order required Anthropic to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States. To ensure compliance, Anthropic had to disable both models for all customers globally.

Anthropic Responds to the Export Control Directive

The government stated its concern was a potential jailbreak. Anthropic reviewed the technique and found the vulnerabilities were minor, already known, and replicable using other publicly available models. In their public statement, Anthropic was direct: they disagree with the decision, believe it sets a dangerous precedent, and are working to restore access.

The Precedent for AI Regulation

This is the first time the US government has used export control authority to pull a commercial AI model from the market. Anthropic stated that if this standard was applied across the industry, it would essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers. The action signals a shift in the direction of AI regulation.

Everyday Claude Models Remain Unaffected

Access to all other Anthropic models was not affected by the directive. Claude Sonnet, Haiku, and Opus remain available. For teams that use Claude for day-to-day work, nothing changed.
